Zafar put in a match winning performance with figures of 8-0-23-4 and 35 with the bat

Staring down the tunnel following three consecutive losses Melbourne NY Alliance (MNYA) needed to turn back Somerset. Dubbed as the return fixture from a fortnight ago the stage was set at Canarsie Oval, arguably the best cricket ground in the city. Upon winning the toss Melbourne’s captain Troy Mars invited Somerset to take first strike. With seven consecutive weeks of torrential rains the conditions offered moisture to the seam bowlers. Carlos Bachu with his left medium fast continuously wrapped the pads of the openers with little bat coming into play. Even with a leg before decision seeming imminent, the initial dismissal came via the run out route, as Bachu wrapped the pads yet again with the ball rolling out to backward point with Roopnarine combining with Mars to find the prodding batsmen out of his crease.

Initially runs were hard to come  as Bachu picked up his scalp with Somerset Skipper Brian Cumebatch plumb in front. P Harris and J Rowe set about the repair job cashing in on some loose bowling by the change bowlers. A threatening third wicket partnership was cut short as Rowe (22) lobbed a short delivery from Ravello, with Bachu completing a single-handed leap at mid off to complete the dismissal. Harris took advantage of any short bowling from the medium pacers. Mars introduced spin to good effect as the twin of Rahimullah Shakoor and Zafar Yusuf dried up the runs in tandem. Yusuf was the more incisive of the pair as he maintained a procession from the middle to the bleachers, as he struck Harris (39) in front. Stefan Rampersaud took advantage of a mix-up between the sixth wicket pair to complete a run out with a direct hit from short mid wicket. Down the order Roger Larrier played cameo of 23 to stave a complete collapse. Again it was Yusuf with the final say as Larrier (23) drove, edging to slip where Shakoor completed a regulation catch. Somerset posted 152 in 33 overs, with Yusuf as the main destroyer with 8-0-23-4 he was supported by Bachu, Ravello, Shakoor and De Freitas with a wicket each.

Troy Mars played a skippers knock 68*, to take is aggregate to 346 runs on the season, averaging 88.5

Troy Mars played a skipper’s knock 68*, to take his aggregate to 346 runs on the season, averaging 86.5

Like Somerset Melbourne NY Alliance were slow in their approach with Shakoor and Yusuf partners at the top of the order as well. Shakoor (14) was the first to go, caught at backward point to a leading edge, Darrell Evelyn the bowler. Anthony Harewood scored two before Evelyn found his edge with Harris completing the catch at slip. In a bold move Bachu was promoted up the order combine with Yusuf for another fruitful partner which saw Melbourne Alliance to 51/1 after 15 overs. Bachu had done enough to improve his batting record before C Small had his man to a successful leg before decision. Yusuf continued to rotate the strike as he found his captain Mars as a capable partner.  Mars curbed his inhibition, relying less lusting hitting as Melbourne closed in on the score at 100. Yusuf (35) played solidly throughout his innings, until he began to attempt cross batted strokes. Playing across the line to Larrier, Yusuf had no reprieve this time to be dismissed leg before. Next in was De Freitas, struck in front of a golden duck, 100/5.

The match had now shaped to be Melbourne’s to lose rather than Somerset’s to win with the equation at 51 runs needed in 15 overs. Ravello joined Mars, as the pair mixed solid defense with quick running between the wickets to drive home the momentum. Mars added insult to injury as he whipped Larrier for two sixes over the mid wicket boundary. Ravello was no bystander as he took 7 off an over himself and even injured Evelyn who failed to hold on to a return catch as he was struck where it hurts the most. Evelyn completed his seventh over, but in grim-macing in pain he left the field to a nurse his wound. Larrier return for a tight over before Mars took apart Small with 15 runs coming in what was the final over. Melbourne Alliance completing the equalizer against Somerset with a comfortable five wicket victory. Mars unbeaten on 68 and Ravello still standing on 12, the win coming with 42 balls to spare. Evelyn 2/24 and Larrier 2/25 were the best efforts with the ball for Somerset.

Melbourne will look to build a momentum going into next weeks double header against MVP and Punjab both at Baisley Pond Cricket Park. Somerset will be off this coming weekend and resume play against Challengers on June 29th in the Mark Clarke Knockout Trophy. For full schedule click :

The fifth round was fan-filled in the EACA as NY Centurion notched their second win in as many matches. This time they were punching in their own weight bracket rather dislodging one of the Big Five, in Big Apple. Centurion’s win has drawn them level on points with Big Apple, 12. As for Big Apple they will have their work cut out for them this weekend when the meet Hillside on June 16th.

Like Big Apple, Hillside will be going for the kill after having lost pole position to Meten-Meer-Zorg (MMZ). MMZ scored 183/8 on the back of 50 from Deonauth Baksh and Amarnauth Persaud 36. Hillside did not only fall short in being routed for 61, so too surrendered  Zone I’s top spot. Rocky Kowchai was the main destroyer with 4/15. Arsenal kept pace as they shot out Phantom to move to 12 points. With Camelot joining the party, victorious over Falcons to move into the sixth round with 12 points as well.

by Dyon Ravello

Ardsley made the trip to Baisley Pond, Queens where they met Melbourne NY Alliance. Melbourne won the toss and inserted the opposition to take first strike. Melbourne made use of the moist conditions as seamers Roopnarine and A. Khan accounted for the openers by the end of the fourth over. Batting at number three Kevin Murrell combined with former West Indian International Junior Murray to repair the damage. Murrell got into his stride a he walloped 25 off Khan’s third over, effectively ousting the bowler from the attack. At the other end Murray seemed circumspect as he attempted to acclimatized to the conditions.

Melbourne’s captain Troy Mars replaced Roopnarine from the Pond End, as he nipped Murray’s edge, with glove-man Rahimullah Shakoor completing the dismissal. Anthony Harewood had Orient Bostic caught at the wicket with Shakoor taking a sharp catch to his right. Murrell continued to anchor the innings even as he lost another partner, Chris Bachu finding the edge with Mars finishing a regulation catch behind the stumps. Amid the constant procession, Murrell was given a life as he slapped Ravello to extra cover, with the fieldsman unable to hold on. Bachu accounted for two scalps in his sixth over to maintain the pressure on the batting side.

Murrell (43) looking to step on the pedal could only manage to sky a return catch, Mars’ third snatch on the day. Jamal Simon was joined by Lester Douglas as the pair tried to release the shackles. Simon was keen running in between the wicket, and was even spared as Shakoor failed to effect in what should have been a simple run out with Simon 15 yards up the pitch. Both Mars and Shakoor kept the screws locked with their miserly off breaks. Douglas had a maximum as he swung Mars over wide mid wicket, but generally the boundaries were few on the day. Ardsley closed their innings by posting 183/9 with Douglas contributing 30. For Melbourne Bachu was the pick of the bowlers with 3/36, Mars 2/32, Shakoor, Khan, Harewood and Roopnarine all with one wicket each.

Set 184 at a modest rate of 4.6 runs per over Melbourne Alliance were confident in chasing the total. Simon began the defense with a maiden over first up. Shakoor stroked two sixes and boundary signalling his intent. Yet the heroics were all but short lived as Shakoor was adjudged stumped off the bowling of Simon to be the first man out. Harewood joined Stefan Rampersaud adopting less aggressive approach. Harewood nicked one onto his pad, which resulted in an appeal, as the umpire affirmed the appeal. The impact the ball made on the bat was so distinct that the stewards 70 meters away could decipher the sound similar to the Snickometer. Ardsley made the gallant decision to withdraw their appeal, recalling Harewood.

Undeterred by all the commotion Simon breach Rampersaud’s gate, through bat and pad identical to his dismissal to Khan a fortnight earlier. Mars opened his account by crashing a huge six over mid wicket. Harewood fell to another leg before decision but his time without reprieve. Mars fashioned his knock as Shakoor had done before him as he whipped a volley to the square boundary. The moisture seemed to overwhelming as yet another fiery display was quelled, Mars 24 caught at the wicket off Douglas 64/3. Now Melbourne has lost its talisman with 160 needed for victory, Ravello joined Persaud. Douglas bouyed by his success, found added motivation as he went pass Ravello’s bat outside off stump.

Looking for the effort delivery Douglas strayed down the legs concede three wides. Douglas was in the hunt again a he wrapped Ravello on the knee roll outside off, initiating a confident appeal. Ardsley were pumped as they claimed their fifth wicket, Melbourne Alliance trembling with the chills. From there on Melbourne found no repose as Persaud was adjudge leg before and Khan bowled by Orient Bostic. Bachu went for the jugular, to only pick out mid wicket, where the fieldman took an exquisite diving catch with Bachu still looking for his first run of the season. Douglas claimed Ujerm Galloway leg before playing on the back foot as Bostic played timber music with Errol Deally’s wicket to complete the rout. Melbourne Alliance 83 all out with more that 20 overs unused. Lester Douglas led the wrecking crew with 4/13, to add to his cameo with the bat to earn the Man of the Match, with Simon 2/19 and Bostic  2/29.

Melbourne have now lost three consecutive matches and will be keen to improve that record when the travel to 80th Street Canarsie Brooklyn to play Somerset on June 15th. Somerset will be looking to maintain this season’s record against Melbourne following their victory a week earlier. Ardsley face West Indian at 108th Street on June 16th in a Father’s Day affair.

Richmond Hill edge Atlantis to Top Zone II

Azurdeen Mohammed 133 led MMZ over Long Island United

Azurdeen Mohammed 133 led MMZ over Long Island United

EACA Power 40 resumed following the holiday intermission. For Meten-Meer-Zorg it was business as usual even having been inactive for the past two weeks. MMZ piled on 294 on the back of 133 by captain Azurdeen Mohammed. Deonauth Baksh and Saud Hossien contributed fifties to complete the onslaught. Long Island United were without fervor as they fold to the swing bowling of Rayhanul Islam. Islam sneering 5/17 to rout the Islanders for 79.

Centurions got their account on the road with a comfortable win over Phantom. Phantom posted 137 but it was not enough as C raghnauth finished unbeaten on 53 to lead his side to a seven wicket victory.  Falcons took Hillside to the depth after scoring just 116. But Hillside held their nerve to complete a three wicket to maintain pole position in Zone I. Big Apple made light work of Camelot completing a  convincing nine wicket victory.

Swing bowler Rayhanul Islam scalped 5/17 to help rout LIUCC for 79

In Zone II Richmond Hill face leaders Atlantis as the weekends most competitive fixture. Neither of the sides failed to live up to the billing as Atlantis posted 183 with Henderson Blades 46 and Greg Robinson 44 not out. Shameer Sadloo was workmanlike as the skipper with 4/28 and Sudesh Dhaniram 3/47. Set 184 at a rate of 4.6 per over Richmond Hill fancied their chances of extended their winning record against Atlantis. Casper Davis Jr drew first blood as he removed Debo Sankar and Sudesh Dhaniram to dent the Richmond Hill response. Jason Greaves accounted for Imran Alli to make it three down early on. Richmond Hill found their way again with a partnership between Wazid Ward 54 and Prashad Mahadeo 39. Shameer picked up the cause even amid a procession of dismissals. Shameer remained unbeaten on 35 to complete an all-round match winning performance to edge their rivals by a solitary wicket.

In other results ACS/Everest trounced Eastside Warriors by 302 runs. This was Everest’s first taste of the action all season as their previous fixtures were unplayable. Allstars register their first win, coming over Victory to keep the latter rooted at the bottom of the table. Enmore and Galaxy did not play their match and the result is under review. Action continues this Sunday.
